COVENTRY MUSIC TIMELINE 50'S TO PRESENT
NEW UPDATE (Currently working on the Who's Who (bit by bit) - March 7th 2009
Now that work has begun on the Coventry Music Exhibition by the Coventry Herbert Museum and Art Gallery, I'm attempting to do more work on this site -it will take a while. Already completed is a guide to Coventry in the Pop Charts 1959 to present in two posts. Apart from a year to year guide to the main bands / artists (signed and undigned) in the City with links to info about them where available, there will a who's who (it's never gonnna be toatlly complete of course -but..), and a list of singleas and albums by Cov artists that maybe didn't make the charts or intersting demos.
Yes - yet another Coventry music site for Vox! The purpose is explained in more detail in the profile but basically it's
an offshoot of the Hobo Cov music Vox blog. I've created this one as I promised to complile a Timeline on Coventry music towards the creation of the Coventry Music Exhibition being developed for 2009 by the Herbert museum and art gallery and it occured to me that there is already a lot on the Hobo site so a new blog would give a clearer focus.
I will create a page for each year from the 50's to present outlining the main bands and the chart positions and venues
with links to more information, You Tube and audio where available. I will use the Hobo, Broadgate Gnome, Dean Nelson, Rex Brough Where to find info on Coventry Bands (Hobo directory) Coventry Band My Spaces and other Cov sites as sources of information and and the books by Pete Chambers - I Wish I Was Me by Pete Waterman and Ska'd for Life by Horace Panter.
Trev Teasdel
PS Part of the idea of compiling it on a public blog is to give Cov musicians a chance input information / dates or correct information. This is important as the museum team will be using it to develop the exhibition. Your chance to help build up the profile of Cov music.
NOTE - THE POSTS ON THIS SITE WILL BE ADDED TO AS MORE MATERIAL IS FOUND - FOR THE TIME BEING THEY ARE ALL A WORK IN PROGRESS.
NOTES
- Will start from the 50's upwards - as it is a blog the 50's entries will be at the bottom eventually as the site develops.
- At the moment information for the fifties is lacking so all entries will be on one page unless the amount of information warrents separation into pages.
- I will include benchmark entries related to Coventry or Rock n Roll history or politiacal history where relevant as reference points.
- I hope to construct a Who's Who eventually and the basis for a Two Tone Family tree which the Exhibition will need.
- Important notices about the development of the Coventry Music Exhibition will be put on this top blog along with links to the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum Exhibition blog.
- Enjoy, watch it grow and feed back via comments. The museum is keen to find co-sponsors for the Exhibition - ideas towards that or even better - geuine offers would be great and of course they wil need artists to supply costumes, instruments and other display items for loan.
Links to posts on the Hobo Site about the Coventry Music Exhibition -
Trev Teasdel and Pete Chambers both had similar proposals about the need for a
Coventry Music Museum. Trevor drafted a proposal in 2003 and circulated it and Pete wrote an article in the Backbeat column of the Coventry Telegraph. You can find Pete's article by Googling his Backbeat Column (if I find it again I will link it here!) and below is a link to my original proposal.
Trevor's Proposal for a Coventry Music Museum
Here are some updates since Pete and I have been involved with the Herbert Museum and Art Gallery on the proposal which is now for a Coventry Music Exhibition for 2009 and which may, if successful, form a permanent display at the new Herbert.
Coventry Music Exhibition Exhibition Update Pete Chamber's proposal for Jerry Dammer's Diorama
Coventry's Walk of Fame Also a link to the latest minutes will be on here soon.
Chart positions based on The Guiness Book of Hit Singles which uses the NME charts for the 1950's and Record Retailer (Now Music Week) top 50 from 10th March 1960. Sometimes I have cross referenced them with the NME 4o Years of NME charts where something has appeared in that chart but not the Record Retailer (the B side of Lovesick Blues - She Taught me to Yodel is an example. Where relevant I've used The Warner Guide to UK and US hit single charts to give an approximate US position and the NME 30 Years of Album Charts for albums.
Pete Chambers sent the following link also which I will explore. http://www.everyhit.com/

This section will be a work in progress for a while and even then I can't promise to have included everyone and have tabulated all the bands each musician has been in. However corrections and contributions are welcome. So far these are taken from The Broadgate Gnome site and Rex Brough site.

THIS POST IS STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS AND IS A SPECIAL TYPE OF TIMELINE. It will probably be located at the bottom of the blog eventually so as not to interupt the flow of the main year to year timeline but for the moment will remain here while I'm working on it. Researching and adding in the many hits of Pete Waterman and SAW as writers / producers will be a task in itself! If any one thinks any artists / songs should be added or not included let me know. This covers Coventry and surrounding area eg Rugby, Nuneaton, Bedworth, Warwick, Leamington Spa. Some bands may have members in from other towns. Frank Ifield was Coventry born but also a big star in Australia.
Main source Guniness British Hit Singles based on NME in the 50's and Record Retailer / Music Week from 1960 - the hits produced by Stock Aitkin and Waterman were found on THIS SITE and cross checked with the British Hit Singles Book)
Record Retailer was the industry standard. Pete Chamber also kindly provided lists and I've consulted the Stock Aitkin and Waterman site for lists of their singles and song written and produced and cross referenced them with British Hit Singles. my copy of Hit Singles only goes up to the early 90's, will update when I get a more up to date issue.

Benchmark - 1962 saw the Consecration of the the New Cathedral in Coventry with the Queen in attendance. Coventry schools turned out for it (I know I was with the Willenhall Wood school group). There is footage of the consecration and the helicopter fitting the spire on Dean Nelson's site Here.
The average chord sequence in the early sixties was C Am F G (until the Beatles broke the mold) and the most innovative record in the charts in 1962 was Telstar - the first pop record to use a moog synthesizer. Nonetheless it was based on the above chord sequence.
1962 saw the Beatles enter the charts for the first time briefly with Love Me Do. Frank Ifield would put Coventry (and Australia) at the top of the UK charts this year.
Coventry guitarist once tuned John Lennon's Rickenbacker guitar for him at theMatrix Ballroom November 1962.
Known Bands that formed in 1962
The MATADORS 62 / 67 Beat group (actually from Hinkley but played in Coventry) with Hary Heppinstall on drums. In 1964 they signed with Joe Meek as recording manager and cut a number of sides with him. Their first single was leased by Meek to Columbia in 1965 and local sales proved healthy. They released a second single, but dissaffection was setting in with Meek's techniques and they shopped around for another recording manager, and both Tony Hatch and Andrew Loog Oldham both showed interest around May 1966. By 1967 they were being courted by Polydor, but as the label had a low profile in the UK then, but they never released any singles. They became Magazine in 1967 with the addition of a brass section. - Lovesick Blues - No 1 (5 wks at the top) on the charts for 17 wks (US No 44)
Also on the NME charts She Taught me to Yodel No16 for 5 wks
B side of Lovesick Blues

During the 1950's the bombed heart of Coventry had been reconstructed and Phoenix like a brand new city centre had
arisen by 1960. As both Pete Waterman had expressed in his autobiography I Wish I was Me (see the 1950's post) and Trev Teasdel in his Coventry Tale (growing up in the 1950's ) (again linked on the the 1950's post) it both felt and looked new, and generated a feeling of new potential that was a general feeling throughout the 1960's. Coventry's reconstruction embodied that feeling 'anything's possible' and 'reconciliation' interfaced with the optimism and innovations in the wider culture. It was an exciting decade although no one in 1960 would know what would develop during the decade. It was to be a good decade for Coventry music. The other side of the coin was that the optimism was forged against a backdrop of widespread nuclear testing, growing concern over the environment, the Vietnam war, Civil rights campaigns, troubles in Northern Ireland, built in obsolescence and the development of a 'throwaway' culture and alienation in affluent society, Harold Wilson's 'squeeze', political scandels, assassination (Kennedy, Martin Luther King) and more. As far as music was concern, all this would be reflected in the music as the decade rode on and a growing feeling that young people were going to change the world, establish an alternative society.
However in 1960, mainstream music was fairly innocuous, soft rock had replaced the hard rock of Elvis and Bill Haley - even Cliff Richard and Elvis toned down the music, extending their range and widening their audience. There was an undertow of cool jazz reflected in songs like Fever and in charting bands like Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball etc. Even Elvis had a rasping sax on his first post army album - Elvis is back. Jazz proliferated in Coventry - the Tiara Buana Jazz Band for example. Jazz was top of the list at the Coventry Arts Umbrella Club and the Umbrella would launch the cities first folk club in this decade. On the other hand, in Liverpool a new force was beign marshalled with the Beatles and other of the later beat groups and in New York a young Bobby Dylan was honing his protest songs. What was underground in the early 60's would soon be in the mainstream by the mid 60's. A new generation was emerging that grew intolerant of war, exploitation, pollution etc. The Coventry music scene emerged in this context with a growing sense of ideology being interlinked. That's not to say there weren't a lot of bands who's perpectives were purely commercial, but as the decade moved on, the feeling of being part of a growing alternative society began to permeate the music and the music began to influence the fans.
But this was 1960 and all that was to come -

BENCHMARKS - Birth of Rock n Roll
Dec 18th 1954 Bill Haley and the Comments debuted the UK NME singles charts with Shake Rattle and Roll at No
13 - being the first Rock n Roll disc to make the UK charts. it reached No 4 (No 7 in USA) and stayed in the charts 14 weeks. It was followed closely by Rock Around the Clock which spent two weeks on the chart initially in Jan 1955 reaching No 17 - returning more forcefully in Oct 1955 for 17 weeks reaching No 1 UK (USA No 1). The single took off as a result of the song being featured in the film Blackboard Jungle ( focussing on delinquency in an American schoolresulting in the first Rock n Roll riots in the UK with some of its Teddy Boy audience jiving in the aisles and ripping up the cinema seats. Elvis had began recording for the Sun Label
in Memphis and charting on the Country and R & B charts in the States during 1954 / 55. On the 5th May 1956 Elvis Presley entered the UK NME charts with the RCA Victor hit Heartbreak Hotel, reaching No2 (No 1 USA) and followed closely by Blue Suede Shoes. In January 1956 Lonnie Donagan had already entered the NME singles chart with Rock Island Line kick starting the UK Skiffle movement. Less than 15 years before Bill Haley's debut, Coventry city centre had been raised to the ground by Hitlers crew and a new city centre was rapidly emerging during the 1950's. Despite it all Coventry was still a thriving Car manufacturing city with a strong shop steward movement and many of the city's baby boomers would be toting guitars in the decades to come and creating a new strand to the city's long and interesting history. That of the post war Coventry music scene.
Broadgate Gnome have pointed out the importance of the M45 / M1 link between Coventry and London for access to gigs and visiting bands. The M45 / M1 were opened November 1959. The motorway cafes were also imporatant social meeting places and hang outs for travelling bands.
Some great 50's Coventry You Tube on Dean Nelson's site
Quote from Pete Waterman's book I Wish I was Me
"Every Tuesday I'd go there (to see his cousin Jean (16) in 1956 - she had a wind up Gramaphone) with my mum on
the No 7 bus and walk across the bombed city centre to listen to Jean play
these great records. Coventry was still makeshift with a wooden Woolworths and seven-odd bombed buildings in every street but there was still a sense of it being the first of the brand new cities, of everything starting again...and of course there was poverty but you just accepted it. We never had enough money to last the week, so my mum didn't put the electricity on until my dad got off the bus"
"It was such a great time to be growing up in. Immediately after the war, things were tough, but it was all so exciting. And everything was still forming; the world seemed to be coming together. There was a kind of openness about everything"
The Coventry Arts Umbrella Club
was important to the musical developments in Coventry, through Jazz in the 50's and early 60's, to hosting Coventry 's
first Folk club in the early 60's to being rehearsal room, hang out and venue for many a band in the late 60's and early 70's, including early days Two Tone musicians Neol Davies and John Bradbury at it's later HQ in Queen Victoria Rd. The Umbrella moved in the 70's to the Charterhouse and I believe it's still going in some form but more as a arts club now.
THe Umbrella club was opened in Little Park St. in 1955 by Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe who were appearing with the Goons in Coventry at the time.
Umbrella magazine also published an article by Phillip Larkin. There is a lot of material on the Hobo site and in Coventry archives relating to the Coventry Arts Umbrella Club
Here's a link to articles on the Umbrella in the 1950's on Hobo -

More post on the Umbrella club on the Hobo site and photos and more material in the Coventry Archives.
Coventry Bands and Artists in the 1950's
VIN LLOYD AND HIS MOUNTIES
According to Pete Chambers (Page 120 - in his book - Godiva Rocks) they were Coventry's "first big pop group. A nine piece skiffle band who met at The Coventry Technical College and all came from Wyken. Auditioned on ITA for The Carroll Lewis show, supported the Kirchins on a tour of Scotland. see Godiva Rocks for more.
The CHALLENGERS 57 / 65 Leamington based Skiffle Group. Formed during the Skiffle boom. Lead Vocalist Woody Allen joined The Three John.
Sources Broadgate Gnome and Godiva Rocks P 50. Godiva Rocked to A Backbeat p39
1959 - The ZODIACS
Formed. Recorded 4 tracks at Midland Sound Recorders, According to Godiva Rocks the band's drummer was Nigel Lomas (older brother of Roger Lomas). To be featured along side the Exhibition's 30th Celebration of Two Tone prior to hte opening of the Coventry Music Exhibition in 2009. They will be celebrating 50 years (and still together!!). They appeared on New Faces in 1977 singing the Steve Jones and Rod Bainbridge song Last Night we Called it a Day. Two of them joined the Sabres and Nigel Lomas has been in a string of bands.
Sources - Broadgate Gnome but not much more info I'm afraid and P36 in Pete Chamber's Godiva Rocked to a Backbeat and p 44 in Godiva Rocks).
The VAMPIRES
Influential Rock n Roll Band in the area, one of the first formed in 1959 fronted by Vince Martin (later Holliday) and Johnny Washington (formerly Hounslow). Headlined at Nuneaton's Co-op Hall and their support band was The Beatles!! Despite that they never cut a disc and Vince went on to form form an Entertainment Agency - Big Three Enterprises - later JRD Entertainment booking Cilla Black, Shane Fenton, Lulu and local bands like the Sorrows.
Sources p 108 of Godiva Rocks & Godiva Rocked to a Backbeat books p45 by Pete Chambers
THE CHADS
A Birmingham band formed from the Sundowners in the late 50's but who played tons of gigs in Coventry. Mick Adkins was replaced in 1965 by Jeff Lynne before he went on to form Idle Race. (See Broadgate Gnome and Godiva Rocks)
REG DIXON - Coventry born comedy act and Dame. Sang a song Send me to Coventry (My Home Town). His self-penned theme tune Confidentiality (1949) was a No 2 Sheet music hit of the time and was also recorded by the Beverley Sissters, Max Bygraves, Danney Kaye, Geraldo and his orchestra. He also had a hit with Ordinary People. More on Reg Dixon can be found in Godiva Rocks p22.
CHRIS COWLING TRIO -
Not sure when they formed actually but in the late sixties Chris Cowling playing boogie piano 50's style with his trio at the Coventry Arts Umbrella. During the 60's Chris organised Jazz and music sessions at the Umbrella. I got the impression that they started out in the late 50's but I can't be sure. A little bit more about them on the Hobo site both under Coventry Arts Umbrella posts and a separate post about them in the Hobo Index.
DELIA DERBYSHIRE
Coventry born, she joined the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and although she didn't write it, she played and arranged the iconic Theme for Dr Who. She mixed with the most creative minds in the 60's, including Pink Floyd and John and Yoko and produced other works - eg Electrical Storm in 1969. Read more in Godiva Rides p22.
COVENTRY CHARTS
Although not actually from Coventry, Bert Weedon (famous author of the infuential Guitar tutor Play in a Day) lived in Allesley Village, Coventry in his 2nd home during the 1960's. My father serviced his vacuume cleaner and bought me my first guitar soon after at 15. Many Cov artists cite Bert Weedon as an early inspiration to pick up a guitar including Kevin Harrison. (See Pete Chamber's book Godiva Rocked to A Backbeat P35) See HOBO site Here
His first hit single was in 1959 with -
Guitar Boogie Shuffle in the charts for 9 weeks reaching No 10 in the NME charts. (Source Guiness Book of British
Hit singles).
Nashville Boogie in the charts for 2 weeks reaching No 29 (Source as above)
Apart from that Coventry's Chart history doesn't get started until 1960 with Frank Ifield.
